COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Resident Services Committee: In the absence of Chair Martha Wood, Vice President Carol Jennings read the report of the September meeting. Mark Salvatore, Director of Dining Services at the Village Care Center, was the speaker. Copies of the weekly menu were provided along with a nutrient analysis. Ten to eleven thousand meals are prepared each month by 75-80 associates, who also eat together. Each new cycle incorporates something new, and high protein is emphasized. Mark believes the food should be nutritious and enjoyable at the same time. Specialty items and requested dishes are also offered. Residents may use dining credit and visitors may pay with cash. Maria Timberlake, vice president of senior living, commented on the energetic and helpful staff. Maria reported The Meadows project has been slowed down because of unexpected rock that needs to be dealt with. The Meadows parking should open in October, and the first building is scheduled to open in late June 2017. The next meeting is Oct. 10.

Finance Committee Chair Gerry Wachsmann reported on the August meeting. Overall August performance showed a decrease in net assets for the current fiscal year, primarily due to reduced operating revenues. Both Entrance Fee and Lease deposits were below budget, as were move-ins. Revenue was $182,000 below budget, offset partially by expenses which were $60,000 below budget. Occupancy at the end of August: Independent Living – 724; Village Assisted Living – 173; Village Care Center – 278.

Health Services Committee: Chair Helen Darby reported the next meeting will be Oct. 12 in the Administration Board Room.

Sales, Marketing and Communications Committee: Chair Margie Stowell, reported on the September meeting. Melinda Ward, administrator of Village Home Health and Village Helpers, arranged for Amanda Cockrum and Marla Mosby to join us. Both Amanda and Marla are Registered Nurses and Clinical Managers. They presented a power point presentation demonstrating many of the services of Home for Life Solutions, Village Helpers - In-Home Care and Village Home Health. There are about 21 nurses involved in Village Home Health, which covers both the Village and the community. Informative handouts were distributed describing their services, including the hourly rates. Village rates are discounted from the metro area rates, and, depending on the individual Village contracts, their rates can be discounted as much as 50 percent. Martin Mahnken, Home for Life Solutions Manager of Technology, Sales and Customer Support, has an office on the second floor of the Villager Inn, where many items are displayed that are available through Home for Life. You are encouraged to visit this interesting and informative display. Marybeth Roberts, manager of sales, marketing and communications,  distributed and discussed the FY17 sales through August 2016 report. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20.

Nominating Committee: Chair June Dewsberry reported the first meeting of the fall will be on Oct. 6. There is much work to be done in finding new officers, board member, and committee members. Please read the November Village Voice article which gives more information. June also announced the Flu Shot Clinics which will be held three times: Oct. 10, from 1-3 p.m. in the Places Manhattan Room: Oct. 14, from 1-3 p.m. in the Courtyard Community Center; and Oct. 20, from 1-3 p.m. in the CCMPA.
Program:
The speaker was Rodney McBride, vice president of health and community services. Rodney covered a number of areas in his “Health Services Update”. A review was given of the P.R.I.D.E. initiative “Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence”. Green Pride cards are available at the Area Manager's offices for residents who wish to comment on associates who have fulfilled this promise for them. Rodney is looking for “Secret Shoppers” to help with a program designed to check on members of the department. Training will be provided, and a list of possible questions to ask. Contact Rodney if you want to help. Rodney spoke about the Resident Health Center, and the fact that flu shots will be given at no charge. The Resident Health Center, located on the second floor of the Villager Inn, can also accept unused medications to discard – please do not flush them down the toilet. Thanks to a grant, Health Services now has a balance machine which will be very helpful in balance management. Rodney commented that all the Health Services areas received very good marks on their recent surveys. Village Assisted Living received zero deficiencies! A new director of nursing for Village Assisted Living is being sought, as Friday was the last day at the helm for Muriel Lapsley. We need more space in the assisted living community as there is a continuous waiting list. The Village Hospice survey was considered one of the best by the survey personnel. Rodney announced that the Village now has a new administrator for the Village Care Center.  Anthony Columbatto will begin his duties there on Oct. 25. Anthony comes to us from St. Mary's Manor in Blue Springs. Several hospitals are composing preferred provider lists, and the Village is high on the list in each case.
The next General Meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 7. The program will be given by Todd Hollander, director of dining services, Chef Tim Wells and Carmen Wayman, manager of the Courtyard Cafe. There will also be a brief presentation of the results of the resent communications survey.
Respectfully submitted,
June Dewsberry, Secretary, Resident Council

Public Safety associates participate in regional training exercise

John Knox Village Public Safety associates take part in regional emergency preparedness workshop

The Pavilion at John Knox Village hosted Homeland Security officials, FBI, law enforcement officers,  first responders, and more on Wednesday as they received training in responding to a large-scale aviation accident.
The workshop was sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Mid America Regional Council’s Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee. There were around 140 attendees from agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Transportation Security Administration, as well as local sheriff, police and fire departments, hospitals and airlines.
The goal of the training was to discuss the ability to coordinate the response to a large-scale aircraft accident between multiple jurisdictions.
Craig Faith, director of Public Safety at John Knox Village, helped coordinate and bring the training to The Pavilion. The John Knox Village Public Safety Department is an integral part of emergency services for the surrounding area, providing mutual aid with other local fire, law enforcement and ambulance departments when needed.
“These readiness exercises are essential to all phase of emergency management.  If it is not an aviation incident it will be something else,” said Craig Faith. “Any exercise, no matter the scenario, helps us prepare and successfully manage through snow storms, tornado threats and other everyday small and large emergencies.  As always, I was proud to see John Knox Village Public Safety staff right at home with the best of the best in emergency management.  We had well over 100 years of experience attending just with our staff.
Stacy Jones, EMS Lead for John Knox Village Public Safety, this brought him a greater understanding of the large scope of agencies – local, regional, state, federal and private sector, that would be involved in an aviation accident, and what is involved in coordinating the response.
“This training was a great opportunity to meet and begin building relationships with those key players in other agencies,” said Jones.
