Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Residents are invited to attend the city of Lee’s Summit’s
annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: “One Voice for Freedom.” The
theme signifies a harmonious focus on unity, collaboration and community.
It will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at The Pavilion.
The pre-show begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature the Lee’s Summit High School
Jazz Band. The event is held each year to celebrate and honor the life and
legacy of Dr. King. This year’s keynote speaker is Negro League Baseball Museum
President Bob Kendrick. As part of the event, one of the museum’s traveling
exhibits will be available for view during the pre-show as well as at the
conclusion.
Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads will give a welcome, Lee’s
Summit Police Department Officer Nathan Contrell will perform the national
anthem and there will be an Honor Guard with individuals from the Lee’s Summit
Fire and Police departments. The event will also include music by the Bernard
Campbell Middle School Choir, a performance by the “One Voice for Freedom”
dance troupe, musical selections by the “One Voice for Freedom Mass Choir” and
prayers by Pastor Kip Nelson of Legacy Christian Church and Pastor Mike
Dillingham of The Truth Ministries.
