The November 2, 2015 meeting of
the John Knox Village Resident Council was opened by President Jim Ham at
2 p.m. in the Courtyard Community Center. Jim welcomed the full house of
residents attending.
President Dan Rexroth commented
on the World Series Champions, the Kansas City Royals, and asked how many had
stayed up until the end of the final game. Most residents raised their hands!
Dan thanked all volunteers who give time and effort to the Village. Several groups
will be helping with the Village Care Center Thanksgiving dinner for residents
and their families, and this is truly appreciated. Dan announced the Fall
Prevention Awareness Fair scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 10, from 8:30 to 11:30
a.m. in the Places Manhattan Room. This is very important for our demographic,
as falls are endemic in our community.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Finance Committee: Chair Gerry Wachsmann reported on the October
meeting. New resident Bill Owsley was welcomed. The speaker was Tom
Reynolds, from the Information Technology department. Tom gave a brief
update on the changeover to CCI for our telephone and cable service. Kim
Klockenga, vice president of finance, gave the September financial report.
Net deposits for Entrance Fee and Lease sales were below budget, move-ins for
Entrance Fee were above budget and Lease were below budget. Occupancy for
Independent Living: 748, Village Assisted Living: 175, Village Care Center:
281. Although revenue was below budget, it was offset by expenses, which were
also below budget. Kim's next detailed presentation will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 18 Ambassador Room. The next meeting of the Finance Committee will be on
Dec. 9.
Health Services Committee: Chair Helen Darby
reported on the October meeting. The speaker was Theresa Herman from
Medical Records. The health records of the Village Care Center are now stored
electronically. The records include care plans, medication orders,
administration of medications and patient notes. The central storage system is
Health Medex System based in Springfield, Mo. The advantage of the electronic
record system is that it gives quick access to records and the sharing of
information via computer. This system cuts down on medication errors. Doctors
can send prescriptions directly to a pharmacy. The challenges are the amount of
storage required and the cost. When transferring files you must speak the same
language and have compatible systems. It has been determined that the
advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Rodney McBride states he will try
to bring an update on form redevelopment for emergency responders at the next
meeting. The next meeting will be Nov. 11, 2015
Sales, Marketing and
Communications Committee: Chair Margie Stowell reported on the October
meeting. Deann Hanson, John Knox Village Move-in Coordinator, was the
speaker. Also attending were Jeri Parker, senior living consultant and Lisa
Vetter, sales manager for The Meadows. For the last three months, the focus
has been on the various steps of the prospective new resident, from first
contact with the Village (such as attending one of the many sales events taking
place), to the assignment of a consultant, to signing the contract and now to
the actual move-in procedure. Deann told us that she had been with the Village
for 24 years – taking time off for children - and is now back and is happy with
her new job. Jeri Parker
explained how helpful it is for the consultants to have Deann in her position
as Move-in Coordinator. Deann does all pre-inspections of new units. In
addition, she meets with the new residents and explains the move-in benefits
both before moving and after. This contact is very helpful and makes the entire
process of moving less stressful for the client. Deann explained that temporary
housing can be arranged, if necessary, until they move into their permanent
home. Deann works with area managers, helps with orientation, introduces the
new residents to various activities and programs of the Village, and
distributes a planning workbook and communication information. Lisa Vetter spoke about the progress
of The Meadows. To date, they have 18 deposits and 4 holds. (As an update, they
now have 21 deposits and 2 holds.) The Meadows will have a total of 112
apartments. When half of that number have been sold, (approximately 56), we
will be able to go to the bond market. Three successful seminars were held in
October, and the two that are planned for November are already booked. The
monthly sales statistics report was distributed and discussed. The next meeting
will be Nov. 19, 2015.
Nominating Committee: Chair June Dewsberry reported the next meeting
will be Nov. 5. June pointed out the Resident Council article in the November Village
Voice which explains the importance of the Neighborhood Representatives.
Resident
Services Committee: Chair Martha Wood, reported on the October meeting. Maria
Timberlake reported that in the next few months a much more detailed look
at the results of the resident satisfaction survey will be presented to the
Resident Services Committee by the managers of the various affected
departments. The areas to be covered will include Public Safety, Salons,
Resident Life, Dining Services and Operations (maintenance, grounds,
housekeeping). Resident health services covered by the survey will be presented
to the Health Services Committee. This will allow each manager to explain the
results as they pertain to their department and present an action plan. The
first of these presentations was given by Craig Faith, manager of public
safety. Craig explained that there are four Public Safety areas of
responsibility. They are security, dispatch, transportation and ambulance. The
survey identified the 20 highest rated items out of 102 questions. Craig was
pleased to report that seven of the 20 pertained to Public Safety. Security personnel
are assigned to one of five areas of the campus called zones. They not only
drive the campus but walk the buildings and Westminster Park every night. Craig
wants everyone to know that the department is constantly working with the city
of Lee’s Summit, keeping up with changing issues and providing on-going
training for the Public Safety associates. He welcomed member’s questions and
is always open to resident’s concerns. The next meeting will be held on Nov. 9.
Resident Board member Jerry
McElhiney gave a report on what transpires at the John Knox Village Board
meetings. At the last meeting, details of the campus redevelopment program were
given and discussed. Following this, Kim Klockenga, vice president of finance
gave his report. Changes to the Village Associate's Retirement Plan were
presented. Other reports were also given. Some reports require a vote of
approval by board members. Members were asked to read and comment on the 93
page 1014 Federal Form 990 Tax Returns for Fiscal 2015. Twice a year, a Board
Social meeting is held. Residents are invited to these meetings so that they
might become acquainted with Board members and learn more about Board
activities. Jerry has served on the Resident Council Finance Committee and is
the current chair of the Village Foundation Ambassadors Executive Committee. Jerry
encouraged all to attend neighborhood meetings and become involved in the Resident
Council. This is a good way to learn about and offer suggestions to our Village
associates and leaders. Jerry thanked all for their kindness and helpfulness
during his wife's recent illness. He is proud to be one of our Board Members.
Program:
Bob Mitchell, manager of landscaping spoke about his background and his
responsibilities at the Village. He explained the landscaping focus at this
time of year is getting lawns healthy with fertilizer, etc. Bob is developing a
program and schedule for regular maintenance in all areas. His goal is to increase
color, and in that effort, spring bulbs are now being planted, and many annuals
will be added in the new year. Bob is enjoying his job and enjoys hearing from
residents. His phone number is 347-2856. He indicated that volunteers are
always welcome. Many questions were asked and answered.
The next Resident Council General
Meeting will be on Monday Dec. 7. This will be an abbreviated business meeting,
followed by our annual “Holiday Hospitality” which is a special welcome for all
residents who have moved to the Village in 2015. All residents are invited to
join in the festivities. Holiday music will be shared and refreshments will be
served.
Respectfully submitted,
June Dewsberry, Secretary,
Resident Council
