Be Cool! Don’t Let the Heat Slow Your Stride

Are you a John Knox Village walker who’s had to stay on the sideline thanks to our ridiculously hot and steamy Missouri summer? Come on over to The Pavilion and get out of the heat -- walkers are welcome during business hours unless the building is in use for an event.
This is an informal exercise option when the building is available. No set schedule, no organized program. It will usually be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, unless there is a private party or a private event set-up is underway. Watch for a “Private Party” sign near the Courtyard Commons elevator that lead to The Pavilion’s walkway.

DON’T FORGET! The Pavilion Walkway is open now, so stroll on over to the new Courtyard CafĂ© for an ice cold beverage or a healthy snack when you’re finished.

July 2016 Resident Council General Meeting Minutes

Resident Council General Meeting
Minutes for July 11, 2016

The July 11, 2016 meeting of the JKV Resident Council was opened by President Jim Ham at 2 p.m. in the Courtyards meeting room.

Dr. Dan Rexroth, President and CEO of JKV, commented that our longest Associate, Suzie England, had been with us for 44 years, and her great granddaughter now works in the Courtyard Cafe! Dan thanked all for attending the Open House for the new Courtyard Commons building.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Finance Committee: Chair Gerry Waschmann reported on the statistics for May. Net deposits for both Entrance Fee and Lease contracts were below budget. Move-ins for Entrance Fees were on budget; for Lease, below budget. Occupancy for May: Independent Living – 727; Village Assisted Living – 173; VCC – 266. Revenue was below budget, partially offset by below budget Expenses. The figures presented are preliminary figures, the audit for the year 2015-16 has yet to be completed. Overall May statistics reflect a small improvement, however, revenues are still below expectation.
The next meeting will be July 27.

Resident Services Committee: Chair Martha Wood gave the report of the June meeting. The Resident Services Committee met on July 20 in the lobby of the New Courtyard Commons. Maria Timberlake gave a guided tour of all areas of the New Commons. In other business the Committee voted to participate in the July 16 Village Summer Olympics supporting a game and providing cupcakes.
There will be no meeting in August.

Health Services: The speaker at the June meeting was Craig Faith who presented an updated Contact Form titled “In Case of Emergency” or ICE. JKV's Move-In Coordinator, DeAnn Hanson, has begun the process of issuing the new form to all new residents as they move into the Village. We were reminded that filling out this form is recommended, but it is not mandatory. The placement of the completed form will be in a plastic sleeve (furnished with the form), hung with a magnet on the front or side of resident’s refrigerator.
The committee recommended that a presentation at the Town Hall Meetings would be a good place to present this information. District Representatives could also introduce the form at neighborhood meetings. In addition, the committee recommended that an article be placed in the Village Voice and the new form be inserted into the publication. Craig stated that each of the Area Managers have forms available if residents need an extra copy. Home Health nurses will also encourage the residents they care for to complete the form and place it on their refrigerator.

Rodney McBride updated us on the search for a new VCC administrator. At this time, there is one strong candidate from the group of applicants and he will have a face-to-face interview in the coming weeks.
The annual State survey for the VCC was completed at the end of May, 2016 and was a good survey. The VCC received 5 minor deficiencies which have already been corrected.

St. Luke’s Health System has developed a Caring Community Network and now recommends to their physicians and patients LTC facilities that they endorse. Of 26 long term care facilities in our geographic location, two were chosen to be a part of this Caring Community Network, JKV’s Village Care Center and Wilshire. This network will allow JKV to gather data which can then be benchmarked with other like facilities to assist in quality improvement endeavors.

A new Self-Scheduling program has been introduced on one of the VCC units and will be followed to see if this is something that improves staffing and longevity.

Marjorie Stowell was a guest at this meeting and presented opportunities for the committee to staff one of the games at the upcoming JKV Olympics. Our committee will staff the Hockey Table Game. A question was raised asking why JKV continues to have a Home Health Agency presence in Kansas. It was suggested as a topic for our next meeting.
The next meeting will be August 10, 2016.

Sales, Marketing and Communications Committee: Chair Margie Stowell, reported on the June meeting. The speaker was Kelli Snell, Director of Resident Life. Kelli commented on all the renovation being done in the Courtyards area which includes a theater, hair salon, coffee shop, and dining facilities. A concierge will be on duty at the entrance (from 8 am to 8 pm.), and will take reservations for movies and the private dining room – call 347-2405. The old library and cafe will close for now, but will reopen as a library and coffee shop. The new library will have movies to use at no cost. Karen Burec gave the stats for May 2016. Margie reminded all of the JKV Summer Olympics scheduled for July 16 from 11 am to 3 pm.
The next meeting will be Thursday, July 21.

Nominating Committee: The committee is on hiatus until September.

Program:
The speaker was DeAnn Hanson, Move-in Coordinator. DeAnn related that she came to JKV as the original Administrator of Valley View, and worked in that capacity for 12 years. Then she enjoyed 12 years as a stay-at-home Mom for 12 years, during which time she returned to the Village off and on in various responsibilities. Two years ago, DeAnn returned to fill the newly created position of Move-in Coordinator. This position was created for several reasons. Most importantly, to reduce the depositor's stress. The largest barrier to moving to JKV is the reluctance to leave home. Most clients have accumulated 30 plus years of “stuff”. With family scattered, there is limited support. With DeAnn's help, the time from deposit to move-in can be substantially reduced. DeAnn accomplishes this with home visits, home sale support, staging, estate sale help and packing. JKV offers a Moving Assistance Program, or “MAP.” Help is given with personalization of the JKV home. Two days prior to move-in, there is an inspection, and then a visit from DeAnn with the JKV Welcome Bag. DeAnn works with the Area Managers in the orientation process and the transitioning to JKV.
DeAnn answered a number of questions.

Jim reminded all of the “Light the Torch of Pride-Villaqe Summer Olympics” event to be held in the Pavilion on Saturday, July 16, from 11am to 3pm. Help stock the Food Pantry by bringing canned goods. You will receive 6 free tickets for each item. Residents are encouraged to use Dial-A-Ride.

The next General Meeting will be on Monday, August 1, 2016. The program will be given by Richard Leslie, Events Manager for JKV.

Respectfully submitted,

June Dewsberry, Secretary, Resident Council

Two Campus Road Closings Begin July 5

Two roads used by John Knox Village residents, associates and visitors will be closing to traffic effective Tuesday, July 5. (See map below.) Please share this information with your neighbors and visitors.
City of Lee’s Summit Temporarily Closing a Section of Murray Road
Beginning Tuesday, July 5, a portion of NW Murray Rd. between Chipman Rd. and O'Brien Rd. will be temporarily closed to traffic for 4 to 6 weeks, weather permitting. The City is working to replace a water main that has been troublesome for some time.
While only a short segment of the road between the north entrance to The Pavilion lot and the JKV Auxiliary Thrift Shop will be actually closed, drivers will not be able to get through from Chipman to O'Brien. The road is scheduled to remain closed thru mid-August. This is a continuation of a project that has been working its way up Murray Rd. for several weeks.

How to get where you need to go:
  • From Chipman Rd., there will still be access to Villager West, the HCA medical office building, The Pavilion and The Courtyard Apartments and Commons (via The Pavilion’s parking lot).
  • Traveling north from O’Brien, drivers will still be able to get to the Administrative Center, The Village Chapel, Village Assisted Living Memory Care 1, the Ambassador Room and Kansas City Internal Medicine, as well as the parking lot for the JKV Auxiliary Thrift Shop and other businesses.
  • The City has placed signs at Murray and Chipman and at Murray and O’Brien, to discourage folks from trying to get through.
  • The primary detour route will be east and west across O’Brien. People wanting to get to the Macy’s/JCPenney shopping center should be sent across the bridge at O’Brien and Murray. Drivers wanting to get to the north side of campus, to the Village Care Center or to the Target shopping center should be sent west on O’Brien and north on Pryor Rd.
  • Dial-A-Ride and shopping buses will be running behind schedule during this time.
  • The City will increase police patrols to help keep drivers mindful of speed limits and protect the safety of residents. If you see blatant traffic violations on O’Brien, please notify security at 347-2150.

JKV Permanently Closing a Section of Shamrock Ave.
Also beginning Tuesday, July 5, a section of Shamrock Ave. between O'Brien Rd. and Manor I will be permanently closed to traffic. This is the beginning of phase two of the parking lot construction as we begin work on our newest neighborhood – The Meadows.

What you need to know:
  • A temporary turn-around has been put in place for drop-offs and pick-ups in front of Manor I (and as a turn-around for those who forget the road is closed).
  •  On-street parking will still be available on a the east side ONLY of a limited section of Shamrock.
  • The parking lot across the street from the Lakeside Grille building will close permanently.
  • A small section of the parking lot in front of Manor I will re-open.
  • Associates will continue parking on Shady Circle.
  • Lakeshore Manor residents are encouraged to use the lot closest to Pryor Rd.
